Three end-of-year seasonal classics for family pariahs from outside the USA

Traditional holiday stories tend to follow a character home for a family reckoning.

Classic holiday stories take this expected journey and interrogate accepted social values without offering any of the usual comforts outside of the ambiguous understanding that we viewers aren’t alone in our confusion.

I like classic holiday stories.

And I have a few of these classics to recommend that are from outside the land of Coca-Cola and the brand’s globally recognized Jolly Fat Santa.

So to those of you looking for some ‘new’ classics and seeking to escape IRL family drama by immersing yourself in fictionalized family drama of the same sort, I submit these international series for your consideration.

How to Ruin Christmas (3 seasons, South Africa, Netflix)

How to Ruin Christmas: Netflix

How to Ruin Christmas opens with a well-known hook in which the prodigal daughter reluctantly returns for overblown seasonal familial festivities.
