I'd be careful with this argument. Individuals tend to be more aware of their own context and less overtly concerned with larger narratives except as these contribute to their own rationalizations. That's where effective altruism has many of its concerns. I think extreme inequality functions like abuse: both the abused and the abuser are subject to mental paradigms that are hard to escape. That's why structures can be useful in diminishing inequality - once we're in it, we tend to normalize fast on all sides.
