I got a job offer (a nice salary package and healthcare) in the USA. My husband (French) and I went through what we would spend out of pocket from that salary on what we pay for (but it also subsidized by the government to ensure affordability to an extent - EU nations have issues too). To afford the same quality of life in France/Belgium, I'd actually make less (in terms of net salary) if we had moved to the USA. Subsidized childcare, healthcare, etc. actually pays off in the long run for everyone, including upper-income individuals like ourselves. That said, research shows the super-rich in the USA have an outsized influence on policy, and for them, comparing costs for services is really 'foreign.' This is further backed up by research into the care industry, which grew out of structural inequalities (racism, sexism) that underfunded and underpaid the individuals who participate in this sector.
